Best Neighbourhoods in Orleans for Families

Best Neighbourhoods in Orleans for Families in 2026
Orléans is one of Ottawa's biggest family suburbs, and one of its most affordable for the space you get. But it's a long, spread-out community, and a townhouse in Orleans Wood and a detached home in Chapel Hill are in different price brackets with different commutes. If you're a family trying to narrow it down, the useful question is which part of Orléans. Here are five family communities compared on what they cost right now, what's nearby, and how the commute works.

Why Families Keep Choosing Orléans

Orléans sits in Ottawa's east end along the Ottawa River, with Highway 174 as the main route downtown. Families tend to choose it for the same reasons: more house for the money than most of the city, a large and established French-speaking community alongside English-language schools, and everything from big-box shopping at Place d'Orléans to Petrie Island's beaches within a short drive. It's also the part of the city where the O-Train's Line 1 east extension is planned to run, through Convent Glen, Place d'Orléans and on to Trim. Check OC Transpo for the current service status before you count on it in your commute.

5 Orléans Communities Compared
1. Chapel Hill $749K avg. listing

~16% below the Ottawa average · Half townhouses, 40% detached

Chapel Hill is a good fit when you want a bit more room. About half of its roughly 20 active listings were townhouses, averaging between about $617,000 and $650,000, and detached homes averaged around $820,000, with listings across the area running from about $440,000 to $1.3 million.

2. Convent Glen $774K avg. listing

Convent Glen South · ~12% below the Ottawa average · Mix of detached, townhouses and condos

Convent Glen has the broadest mix of housing types of the five: roughly 30 active listings, split between detached homes (about $600,000 to $1.55 million), townhouses (about $379,000 to $630,000, averaging around $459,000) and condos averaging near $298,000. It's also where a future Convent Glen LRT station is planned under the Line 1 east extension, which makes it the one to watch if transit matters to you.

3. Chatelaine Village $674K avg. listing

~24% below the Ottawa average · Townhouse and condo heavy · Close to Place d'Orléans

Chatelaine Village is the best-value pick here if you want to be near the shopping and transit hub. Of about 20 listings, most were condos (averaging roughly $577,000 to $601,000) and townhouses (about $532,000), with only a few detached homes averaging around $623,000. The wide overall range, from $388,000 up to $2.85 million, comes from a single large outlier, so judge it by property type rather than the blended average.

4. Orleans Wood Townhomes ~$418K avg.

The entry point · 70% townhouses · Condos from about $225K

Orleans Wood is the most affordable of the five, and it has the deepest inventory, with 39 active listings when we checked. Townhouses made up about 70% of what we saw, averaging around $418,000 (about $327,000 to $550,000), while condos averaged around $318,000 and detached homes, which are rare here, ran from roughly $591,000 to $750,000. It suits first-time buyers and downsizers who want the lowest entry price and don't need a detached lot.

5. Avalon Typical sale ~$611K–$661K (estimate)

Avalon East and West · Very few active listings

Avalon is a quieter community where homes turn over slowly: there were essentially no active listings in either section when we checked, apart from a single three-bedroom townhouse at $610,000. Zolo's estimates put a typical Avalon West sale at about $611,000 and Avalon East at about $661,000, with homes taking roughly 30 to 36 days to sell. Treat those as directional, and set up a saved search if this is the area you want.

Commute, Transit and Schools

Most Orléans commuters use Highway 174 or the Transitway buses that run along it. By car, expect roughly 20 to 35 minutes to downtown depending on where you start and the time of day. The planned Line 1 east extension adds stations at Jeanne d'Arc, Convent Glen, Place d'Orléans and Trim, but it wasn't clear from the sources we could check whether service is running yet, so confirm with OC Transpo before you buy on the strength of it.

Orléans has English and French public and Catholic schools at both the elementary and secondary level. Catchment boundaries change, so confirm the school for any specific address with the school board before you make an offer.
