About the Area
A neighbourhood with history, heart, and opportunity
Carlington sits in Ottawa's River Ward, bounded by the Queensway and Carling Avenue to the north, Fisher Avenue to the east, the NCC Experimental Farm Pathway to the south, and Clyde Avenue to the west. First settled in the 1920s, the neighbourhood saw its biggest growth surge after World War II, when thousands of homes were built for returning veterans. That history is still written into the streets — Admiral Avenue, Veteran Avenue, General Avenue, and Crerar Avenue are a few of the names that reflect the area's military heritage. In 2022, part of the neighbourhood was designated a Character Area under the Ontario Heritage Act in recognition of this history.
Today, Carlington is increasingly recognized as one of central Ottawa's best value propositions. Neighbouring Westboro and Civic Hospital command significantly higher prices for similar lots and access, while Carlington offers the same proximity to downtown, the Experimental Farm, and the Queensway — without the premium. It draws first-time buyers, young families, and renovators who recognize the neighbourhood's combination of wide lots, solid homes, and room to grow.
