About the Area
Heritage, walkability, and genuine character
The Glebe sits just south of downtown Ottawa, bounded by the Queensway to the north, the Rideau Canal to the east and south, and Bronson Avenue to the west. Its name dates to 1837, when the Crown deeded 178 acres to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church as clergy reserve — "glebe" being the Old English word for church lands. Development took off in the late 1800s and the neighbourhood has been one of Ottawa's most desirable ever since.
Today it's a genuinely walkable urban neighbourhood of heritage Victorian and Edwardian homes, tree-lined residential streets, and a commercial core along Bank Street that feels more like a village main street than a city corridor. It draws families, professionals, and empty-nesters willing to pay a premium for a lifestyle that most Ottawa neighbourhoods simply can't replicate.
